Sturdy shoes with good tread are a must for this hike as there is lots of loose ground.

A much easier version (with no loose ground - apart from the beach!) if you prefer is to continue MacLehose Stage 2 (we turn off for Sharp Peak, about half way along) down to Tai Long Wan beach - and meet the rest of us at Ham Tin restaurants on the beach (It is well sign-posted and you may have to wait an hour or 2 - but it's a beautiful place to wait!) and walk back the same way with everyone.

Sun 6 Oct 2002: Wilson Stage 5, Amah Rock

Sun 13 Oct 2002: Sha Lo Tong
Led by: Kim
Meet: 10 am, Tai Po KCR Station
Walking Time: 4 hrs.
Level:
easy
Description: The taxi to the start costs about $50 (the fare is $30, but the drivers are very reluctant to take you unless you pay more because there is no fare back).

The start pretty much takes us to the village of Sha Lo Tung where nobody lives (plenty of artifacts left in the houses, but no bodies as far as I know, and ghosts did not bother us, either). It was to be the site of a golf course, but the Greenies won! Yipee!! Anyway, we walk through a lovely valley, which includes a crystal clear stream (wonders of wonders!). No signs of high rises, oh, such bliss. At one point if we were to feel like a steep hike we could venture off and up to the Pat Sing Ling Range, but not this time. Another day, another hike when we have toughened up our leg muscles and lungs. Now by this time if I haven't got us all lost we will find ourselves by a wee reservoir. Then, it is an ascent (there has to be one some time!), and onward to Cloudy Hill. We will end up on the Wilson Trail and go down a great ridge (very safe!). And then back to Taipo KCR from the end of the walk (on foot).

We may finish up with a late lunch but you should bring some some food to see you through in case.
Sun 20 Oct 2002: Tseun Wan to Yuen Long on the Yuen Long Ancient Trail

Meet: 9:30 am at Tsuen Wan MTR, exit which points to big buses (exit A)
Walking Time: 5 hours
Level: moderate (no real hard bits)
Description: We will catch a bus (short distance) to the beginning of the trail. The beginning is up and away, but once we climb up the first steps and hill, it's not bad at all. Great views including Tsing Ma Bridge at the start. The walk involves a few twists and turns, and this is where my notes will be of use, or it may be an adventure. Parts I am sure you have done before. We end up in Yuen Long hopefully for at least a drink, and then a bus back home.

We'll take the bus to start walking at Pui O and along the lovely little concrete path through the fields hopefully seeing some buffaloes along the way. And then on paved roads till we come to the start (end of Mui-Wo to Pui-O track). Then if I remember correctly it's UPWARDS for quite a while, first through a forest until we get to some rocks to sit and admire the view. Then down and up again till another lovely spot. And well, you get the picture. I would say moderate to strenuous with a small 's'  because of the up at beginning and the time taken.

Description: Strenuous level " Climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every byway........" The first bit is a breeze as we walk through a village. Then once I find the 'turnoff' (hoping like hell that my memory serves me well), the fun begins. We rock hop and dodge branches up a creek (not for that long). Next, we veer away from the creek, and there is only one way to describe the next potion: steep!!! It's up, up and away! But hey, it's doable, and there is nothing like getting a good workout with views to make it all worthwhile. There is some low scrub, so legs may get scratched, but this does not stop me wearing shorts. We finish up at Ngong Ping and from there we may very well feel like food, at the tea garden or whereever.

Sun Mar 13, 2005: Sai Kung West Exploration
Led by: Angela 2918-0785
Meet: 9.30am Exit C1, Diamond Hill MTR
Walking Time: 4 hours including lunch
Description: We explored some 'orange' trails in the area of MacElhose Stage 3. We got off the bus at Pak Tam Chung and took the nature trail from near the Visitor Centre. We turned left onto the trail leading to Ping Tun and then turned left again at a major junction. At the top of the hill we found a small trail veering left which took us to the top of Tai Tun for fantastic views over the whole park.  As we didn't want to continue on this trail back toward Pak Tam Chung, we headed back down to the main trail and then took a right turn on an old trail to take us towards the valley bottom. We zigzagged through the viney woods for a while, following various indistinct trails until we emerged at a large private commercial garden (slipping easily under the barbed wire to get to the road). After a turn around the garden, we found the exit and discovered we were on the road near Ping Tun. We followed the quiet paved road around and up to Wong Ma Ying and then followed a well-established path, much of it of ancient origin down to Ngong Wo village where we saw a wild boar crossing the path in front of us.
